The research mainly has concerned the different modes of production, established and existing respectively, during the first millennium AD and the Early Medieval Period inScandinavia. The delimitations, functions, structures, interactions and changes of these communities have been questions in focus. Even though the early agrarian societies have been of largest interest, also northern systems with quite different economic bases have been studied. This concerns hunting, fishing and nomadic societies, their delimitations and interactions with contemporary agrarian communities. The research has always been performed with the large scale North European processes and changes as a background.
